Not About The Shark

Jurassic Park is not about a dinosaur amusement park gone wrong.
Signs (by M. Night Shyamalan) is not about aliens.
LOST is not about a plane crash on a mysterious island.

"John Locke" Lost backgammon storytelling

Jurassic Park is about how man wants control and nature doesn’t.
Signs is about a man rediscovering his faith.
LOST is about flawed people looking for redemption.

Everyone loves a good story. It drives deep to our emotional core. It hits hard. It’s visual and memorable. Stories make an impact that a list of the facts can’t.

Charles Dickens realized the power of story. Jesus spoke in parables. Aesop’s fables have survived centuries.

Stories of redemption, love, loss, friendship, sin, and growing up have all been told thousands of times. And there’s always another way to explore the story of human nature.

“Jaws…it’s really about a guy who is sort of dealing with his place in the world–his masculinity, with his family, how he’s gonna, you know, make it work in this new town.” -JJ Abrams at TED (10 mins into talk)

It’s not about a shark.
